Omnibus III Vocabulary

  • Immutable – adj. Unchanging over time or unable to be changed.
  • Excise – v. To cut out surgically, to remove.
  • Endue – v. To provide with a quality or ability.
  • Inspirited – p.t. v. To encourage or enlighten someone.
  • Apostate – adj. n. A person who renounces their faith or political belief.
  • Hubris – n. Excessive pride or self-confidence
  • Prate – v. Talk foolishly or at tedious length about something.
  • Gloze – v. Make excuses for.
  • Implacable – adj., relentless, unstoppable
  • Admittance -n., the process or fact of entering or being allowed to enter a place or institution.
  • Affable – adj. Friendly, good natured, or easy to talk to.
  • Tacitly – adv. In a way that is understood or implied without being directly stated
  • Laconic – adj. (of a person, speech, or style of writing). Using very few words.
  • Austerities – n. a stern or serious quality.
  • Obtrude – n. To force/impose without warrant or request.
  • Predilection – a preference or special liking for something; a bias in favor of something.
  • Errata – n. Error or mistake.
  • Inestimable – adj. Too great to calculate.
  • Exasperate – v. irritate intensely; infuriate.
  • Defrayed – v. Provide money to pay (a cost or expense).
  • Colloquial – Characteristic of or appropriate to ordinary/familiar conversation rather than formal speech or writing.
  • Indictment – n. A formal charge or accusation of a series of crime.
  • Indelible – adj. Making marks that cannot be removed. Not able to be forgotten or removed.
  • Quorum – n. the minimum number of members of an assembly or society that must be present at any of its meetings to make the proceedings of that meeting valid.
  • Palpable – adj. Capable of being touched/felt, easily perceptible.
  • Latent – adj. Present and capable of emerging or developing but not now visible, obvious, or active.
  • Shoddy – adj. Badly made or done.
  • Wistfully – adv. With a feeling of vague or regretful longing.
  • Premonition – n. A strong feeling that something is about to happen, especially something unpleasant.
  • Subvert – v., overturn or overthrow from the foundation, or to ruin.
  • Strident – adj., loud and harsh; grating.
  • Circuitous – adj., (of a route or journey) longer than the most direct way.
  • Coquetry – n., Flirtatious behavior or a flirtatious manner.
  • Lassitude – n. a state of physical or mental weariness; lack of energy.
  • Defrock – v. deprive (a person in holy orders) of ecclesiastical status. -deprive (someone) of professional status or membership of a prestigious group.
  • Capricious – adj, impulsive or unpredictable.
  • Henchmen – n. (derogatory) A follower (Political supporter) prepared to engage in crime by way of service.
  • Bleak – adj., Bare, desolate, and often windswept. Without hope or encouragement.
  • Facism – a government system led by a dictator having complete POWER, forcibly SUPPRESSING opposition & criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc, & emp. aggressive NATIONALISM & often RACISM.
  • Meretricious – adj. apparently attractive but having in reality no value or integrity.
  • Metamorphose – v. to change the form or nature of; to transform
  • Knacker – (British) A person whose business is the disposal of dead or unwanted animals, esp those whose flesh is not fit for human consumption.
  • Jocular – adj. Fond of or characterized by joking; humorous or playful.
  • Intrinsic – adj. Belonging naturally; essential.
  • Lugubrious – adj., Exaggeratedly or affectedly mournful.
  • Antiquated – adj. Old Fashioned or outdated.
  • Astute – adj. having or showing an ability to accurately assess situations or people and turn this to one’s advantage.
  • Nuance – n. a subtle difference in or shade of meaning, expression, or sound.
  • Tonality – n. The character of a piece of music as determined by the key in which it is played or the relations between the notes of a scale or key.
  • Annex(e) – n. An addition to a document.
  • Medacity – n. A lack of honesty.
  • Swank – v, n or adj. To display ones wealth, luxurious and expensive, to display achievements to impress others.
  • Fractiousness – adj. Tending to be troublesome or unruly.
  • Acquirement – n. A skill of mind or body usually resulting from continued endeavor.
  • Arbitrary – adj. Based on random choice or personal whim rather than any reason or system.
  • Cynicism – n. An inclination to believe that people are more motivated purely by self-interest ; skepticism.
